Getting Started

Hey everyone!

Ive been told lately that some of you want to be able to directly talk to each other and hook up online, especially during the winter!

So here you go, we have our own blog now! Lets get to it. Lets use this space to contibue the conversations we started over the summer and to start new ones.

So, lets get started. Any one have a question or a statement? What is everyone doing? Any successes? More importantly, any lessons learned the hard way?

Hope to hear from you all!

Amelia,

Brilliant idea putting together a forum for Artist's Assembled. I've been thinking a lot about what my role is as an artist in society. My ideas of what a studio artist is is not necessarily matching what my life looks like today. This incongruence makes me question art's function and purpose. I would love to hear what others think about this question. And Amelia, I hope you are doing well. I send you thoughts of good health!!

this i know for sure...it is from passion one creates. it is who we ARE. the manifestation is a one of a kind, no other like it on this earth expression of YOU. one creates because it is who you ARE. there is no choice. if someone resonates w/ your piece, the gift is recieved. you have expressed something that touches the heart, the soul of another...something only you, no one else could have done at this time, this place in the universe. that is the gift.

This is a great idea! I haven't (yet) made it to an Artist's Assembled meeting, but after being out of school for 25 years, I'm finally starting to enter exhibits. I often have questions about the technicalities of exhibiting, such as: should I stretch my own canvas? Are purchased canvases looked at differently? When I was in school, my professors were purists who believed that we should only use canvas we had stretched ourselves. I have no idea if this has changed in recent years, as more and better quality pre-stretched canvases have become readily available. Also, questions about artist's statements have occurred to me, and I don't have anyone around me who is experienced in such things to ask. Thanks, Amelia!

Jennifer says "My ideas of what a studio artist is is not necessarily matching what my life looks like today"

what is your perception of what a studio artist looks like?

what does your life look like in comparison?

Considering myself a "studio" artist, it looks like this: I have a studio seperate from my home, I am a painter (as opposed to a video artist, performance artist, etc.)and I work in my studio every day. My daily work consists of many things and I try to make sure most of those things involve paint on a brush aiming, however recklessly or aimlessly, towards a painting surface. My studio is where the mojo to engage in the physical activity of painting happens the best for me. I have my painting "stuff" in my studio (a great benefit having one place for it) along with my computer, my phone, my music and my sometimes chaotic mind and heart. There is also a frig, coffee pot, and microwave, god knows I wouldn't want to have an inspirational moment or two sabatoged by the need for food or caffeine. This sort of structure (if you want to call it that) allows me the freedom to be disciplined, keep a schedule and paint, get that mojo working. It works for me and I love my life as a studio artist. This life didn't come easily and wasn't first in my varied career and now that I have it it isn't always fun or easy but as I see the paintings being produced I am invigorated.
Paint on everyone

I have an idea that Ive been bouncing around my head for a while and was wondering what everyones opinion is, you know, if it would work, or if its even feasible from a participation stand point.

A 24 hour Art marathon in Ft Collins. Here's how it would work. It would start on a Saturday night, say at like 6, and we would have events scheduled for the next 24 hours straight throughout town. For ex. Bas Bleu/theater groups could have a couple of plays scheduled, maybe even a preformance at CSU at 3 in the morning. We could have a band or two on the Oak Street Plaza. The Symphony could perform Sunday morning, PRAC could have workshops, the MOCA could have Art Talks, FT Collins Museum, CoCOA and NCAA could have something in their spaces, etc. All of it needs to be free. The schedule would be in all the papers. ALL of it needs to be advertised in south FC. It's still amazing to me that there are still people that dont know we have a Museum of Contemporary Art.

This could be the start of an Art Festival that could put FC on the map. We would have all the ARTS involved. Beet Street could administer it. I mean isnt this right up their alley?

Anyway, its just an idea, a fun one I think.

What do you think?

CoCOA is planning their fourth annual (major fundraiser for us) "Artathon" for the third weekend in April. This is where member artists create art for 24 hours and ask for hourly sponsorships. This is a major fundraiser for our coop. We have a free outdoor bbq, stuff for kids to do and of course lots of artists doing their thing, always a great time. We are looking forward to doing it this year at our new location in the Poudre River Arts Center. Let me know how this idea goes because we'd sure like to coordinate and help out. Mary Harnett
